Which Truck Size Do I Need? Truck Sizes and Capacity in India

7 min read Updated 27 Sep 2026 WheelSniffer team

Key takeaways

  • Pick the truck by both weight AND volume: light but bulky goods (furniture, foam, cartons) fill a truck long before they reach its weight limit.
  • Rough rule for homes: 1 BHK needs a Tata 407 or 14 ft truck, 2 BHK a 14-17 ft truck, 3 BHK a 17-19 ft truck.
  • For up to about 1 ton inside a city, a Tata Ace or pickup is usually the cheapest option; above 3 tons move to an Eicher 14 ft or bigger.
  • Never overload: the legal payload is written on the vehicle RC, and overloading risks fines, delays and damage.

"Chhota hathi or 14 feet?" is the first question every transporter will ask you. Choose too small and you pay for a second trip. Choose too big and you pay for empty space. This guide explains the common truck sizes used in India, how much each can carry and which one fits your goods - whether you are shifting a home in Indore or sending a full load to Mumbai.

Truck sizes in India at a glance

The figures below are typical. Exact body size and payload vary by model and by body builder, and the legal limit for any particular vehicle is the one printed on its registration certificate (RC). The last column shows WheelSniffer's fair-price estimate for a 100 km one-way trip in that class, so you can compare sizes (trucks in the same capacity class share one rate, so some rows show the same figure).

Weight or volume: which one decides?

Most people think only about weight. In practice, volume decides more often. A 14 ft Eicher can legally carry around 3.5-4 tons, but a 2 BHK household - sofa, beds, fridge, washing machine, almirah and 40-60 cartons - usually weighs well under 2 tons. It still fills most of that 14 ft body because furniture has awkward shapes and cannot be stacked tightly.

The opposite is true for dense goods. Cement, steel, tiles, grain and paper rolls hit the weight limit while the body is still half empty. For these, check the payload first and pick a truck whose limit is comfortably above your weight.

A quick way to estimate volume

  1. List your large items (beds, sofas, almirahs, appliances) and count your cartons.
  2. A standard moving carton is roughly 1.5 x 1.5 x 1.5 ft, about 3.4 cubic feet.
  3. A 14 ft x 6.5 ft x 6.5 ft body holds about 590 cubic feet; a Tata Ace 7 ft body about 100-150 cubic feet depending on how high you stack.
  4. Add 20-30% for gaps, padding and irregular shapes. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one - a second trip always costs more than the price difference.

Which truck for a house shift?

These are typical matches for a normal household. Homes with a lot of furniture, a piano, gym equipment or a large kitchen may need one size up.

Which truck for business goods?

Up to about 1 ton, inside the city

A Tata Ace or a pickup is the workhorse for shops, wholesalers and distributors. For very small parcels (up to 50 kg), a bike is even cheaper - see bike parcel vs mini truck. On WheelSniffer these can be booked instantly through local shifting, and the nearest driver who accepts gets the job.

1 to 10 tons, city to city

This is the range of the Tata 407 and Eicher 14/17/19/22 ft trucks. They are the most common trucks on routes like Indore to Bhopal and Indore to Mumbai. If your load is less than about half the truck, compare the price with a part load (shared truck) before booking.

Above 10 tons

For heavy bulk goods such as steel, cement, grain or scrap, use 10-, 12- or 14-wheel trucks. Their per-km rate is higher but the cost per ton is much lower than splitting the load into smaller trucks.

Goods that must stay dry or secure

Open-body trucks are covered with a tarpaulin. For electronics, garments, e-commerce stock or anything valuable, ask for a closed container (20 or 32 ft). A single-axle 32 ft container suits light, bulky goods; a multi-axle one carries more weight.

Long or heavy machinery

Items longer than about 24 ft or heavier than a 14-wheeler can carry need a trailer (flatbed or low-bed). Over-dimensional cargo may need special permits and route planning, so post these well in advance and share exact dimensions.

Open body, closed body or container?

  • Open body: easiest to load from the side or with a crane; most common and usually cheapest. Needs a good tarpaulin in the monsoon.
  • Closed body / container: protects from rain, dust and theft; loaded from the back only.
  • Half body / high-side: used for loose material such as sand or aggregates.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking by weight alone for furniture or cartons - you will run out of space.
  • Overloading. It is unsafe, can lead to fines at checkpoints and voids any claim if goods are damaged. On WheelSniffer the booking warns you if the weight is more than the chosen vehicle carries.
  • Not mentioning floors and lifts. Loading from a 4th floor without a lift takes more labour; tell the transporter upfront.
  • Forgetting entry timings. Many cities restrict large trucks in the daytime. Smaller vehicles (Ace, pickup, 407) usually have more freedom, which can matter more than price.

How WheelSniffer helps you choose

When you post a requirement, you choose the vehicle and size, enter the weight and see a fair-price estimate for that exact truck and distance before anyone bids. You can switch sizes and watch the estimate change, then let verified transporters within 60 km of your pickup send their bids. There is no brokerage on top. See all vehicle types on the services page.
